Council Member Althea Stevens’ office at 1377 Jerome Ave. in Mount Eden was hit with a bomb threat Tuesday afternoon, prompting a police response, according to authorities.
Police responded after receiving a 911 call around 2:30 p.m. about a threatening email, according to a police spokesperson. The building was evacuated as a precaution, according to reports, and no injuries were reported. The investigation as to the bomb threat remains ongoing.
Stevens’ office remains closed Wednesday and is operating virtually. Staff said they could not comment on the nature of the incident or why Stevens may have been targeted.
Stevens released a statement on Instagram following the incident:
“Earlier today, a bomb threat was made against the Office of Council Member Althea Stevens. We want to reassure the community that we are taking this situation very seriously and are working closely with the NYPD and appropriate authorities to ensure the safety of our staff and the surrounding area.
As a precaution, the premises have been thoroughly assessed, and all necessary safety protocols are being followed. We remain committed to the well-being of our team and neighbors, and we thank everyone for their patience and cooperation during this time. Despite this unfortunate incident, our office remains dedicated to doing the work of the people and serving the residents of District 16.”
