Woodlawn Cemetery Offers New Trolley Tours

Woodlawn Cemetery and Conservancy will be offering an unique experience for visitors this weekend with its Illuminated Angels Trolley Tours.

On Nov. 30, Woodlawn Cemetery is offering an “Illuminated Angels Trolley” tour to explore the angel statues throughout the grounds and “inspire us to look up toward the sky.”

The roughly two hour excursion will take guests through Woodlawn while touring some of the most cherished figurines inspired by European treasures and guard burial lots throughout Woodlawn. Each illuminated angel or stained glass installment featured in the tour will be accompanied a personal narrative to explain its significance in history or to Woodlawn.

Some of the more formidable angels featured in the tour include the “Resurrection” angel, the Kinsley angel, the Gerould Angel and the Malmberry Angel.

These newly developed angel tours were inspired by previous mausoleum tours, according to Executive Director David Ison.

“The tours (mausoleum) were so well received every year, most of them sold out.” Ison said. “It’s about the timing, with Thanksgiving and the holidays, not everybody wants to deal with the holiday traffic in the city, it can be whatever you want it to be.”

The meet up time for the tours will be at 5:15 P.M. at the Woodlawn Conservancy at Jerome and Bainbridge Avenues. Tickets for Woodlawn members are $20 and $25 for non-members. Visitors must pre-register before Saturday evening.
