Merchant Street Fair
The Throggs Neck Merchants Association will be hosting its annual Sidewalk Sale and Fair on East Tremont Avenue from Randall to Lafayette avenues on Saturday, June 29. Many stores along the route are expected to be doing giveaways and offerings of hot dogs, cotton candy and popcorn, said Geri Colon, event coordinator.
It is a chance for the merchants to give back to the community and in their own way say thank you to the customers who come into the stores every day. and it is a day of the businesses advertising and promoting themselves, said Colon.
Merchants from outside of the area where the sidewalk sale takes place will be present, and there will be attractions from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. as in years past.
Heart Disease Awareness
Advance Auto Parts, which has three locations in the borough, took a stand against a leading cause of death among Americans: heart disease.
Customers throughout the month of June were asked to donate $1, $5 or $10 at the checkout as part of the American Heart Association’s “Life is Why We Give campaign.”
The company released this statement from Pedro Guerrero who oversees a borough location:
Our customers and team members at our three Bronx locations continue to respond generously to help raise awareness for heart health. Advance is a strong nationwide supporter of the American Heart Association and it is our hope that contributions from these valued Bronx locations will help them provide much-needed support.
Reunion In Florida
On a recent trip to Florida in May, Paul Mayer and John Collazzi met up with a buddy they hadn’t seen in decades.
George Gerrets, who lived on Hosmer Avenue, met the vacationing Bronxites at a Moose Lodge in Clearwater, where they reminisced about their teen years in Throggs Neck.
The trio also worked together for years at a now-defunct Finast supermarket on Williamsbridge Road in Morris Park while they attended college, alongside fellow clerks Tom Falciano, Tom Harnett, Joey Coniglio, and Donna and Noreen Zulch.
