Local elected officials, community and law enforcement members and residents joined in commemorating the end of slavery in the United States at the Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday, June 3 at Virginia Playground. The holiday, also known as ‘Juneteenth Independence Day’ or ‘Freedom Day,’ commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America.

The Juneteenth Flag was raised to signify the importance of ending slavery in the United States.
