Serving in the U.S. Navy
A sailor form the Bronx is serving aboard a floating airport at sea. Airman Anthony Torres is an aviation boatswain’s mate aboard a carrier operating out of San Diego, California.
Torres is a 2011 Urban Assembly School for Careers and Sports graduate serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt.
He is responsible for crash and salvage, and rescue and safety of the pilots and personnel aboard any aircraft on the flight deck.
Torres credits success in the U.S. Navy to many of the lessons learned growing up in our borough.
I learned to treat everyone with the same loyalty and respect because it comes back ten fold, said Torres.
The carrier is longer than three football fields, measuring nearly 1,100 feet. The ship, a true floating city, weighs more than 100,000 tons and has a flight deck that is 252 feet wide.
Torres is especially proud of earning the Air Warfare Specialist qualification.
Earning my qualification meant that I went above and beyond the average norm. A lot of people take it for granted and won’t study and go through that hard work to earn it.

Peter Rocchio
His final days were spent at an assisted living facility in Mount Vernon.
He was a graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School. Following his high school graduation, he served in the U.S. Army, where he trained as a medic.
He attended St. Francis College, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree he would later complete at CUNY’s John Jay College.
He worked for a time in the 1960s at Chemical Bank in NYC’s Financial District.
Later he became a member of New York’s Finest, and was assigned to the New York City Police Department’s 48th Precinct in the Bronx. He remained on the force for decades.
He later worked for a New York law firm and for an industrial manufacturing company, as well as in private security.
