Castle Hill Little League celebrated its diamond 60th anniversary at its recent gala.
The league, which teaches baseball to boys and girls ages four to 16, marked this remarkable milestone on Friday, March 18 at Maestro’s Caterers.
CHLL welcomed back about 20 alumni players and league officials, as well several elected officials and upwards of 300 guests in total, said Henry Pelayo, CHLL president.
Senator Jeff Klein was the keynote speaker.
Klein presented the league with a proclamation celebrating their anniversary, as did Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr., Assemblyman Michael Benedetto, Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda and city Comptroller Scott Stringer.
According to Pelayo, the current ‘nucleus’ of the league is its volunteer parents, who do everything from maintain the fields to teaching the fundamentals of the game.
For the future, he said that league officials hope to expand the number of teams beyond the 30 it currently fields, create more travel teams to represent CHLL and continue to improve its faculties on Zerega Avenue that some people in the community call “the mini-Yankee Stadium.”
The league will kick off its season this year with its annual parade on Saturday, May 7. It usually features about 800 participants and is the biggest little league parade in the city.
