Bronx Rotary Club News
The Rotary Club of the Bronx meets every Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. at The Shrimp Box Restaurant at 65 City Island Avenue.
The club’s Tuesday, February 16 meeting featured guest speaker
She also spoke of the need of having people feel that they are of value, and of her desire to see young people become instilled with a sense of civic awareness.
The meeting also featured remarks from Iline Gouldman, who thanked the club for sponsoring three children to attend the Wagon Road Summer Camp, a program operated by the Children’s Aid Society that seeks to bring together children of different socio-economic backgrounds while engaging the young people in interesting and challenging activities.
The meeting on Tuesday, February 23 featured guest speaker Dr. Thomas Isekenegbe, Bronx Community College’s president. He spoke of how his career in education brought him to his present position, where he will focus on restructuring the college in terms of helping students who need remedial help for college-level work in a timely manner. Students at the school sometimes need remediation because they have a limited knowledge of the English language or are recent immigrants.
M.S. 80 student gets into specialized high school
A recent South Korean immigrant, Na Yeon Choi, has defied the odds. Despite having to adjust to a new country, the NYC Department of Education reports that she will be attending on of the specialized high schools this fall.
This is all the more remarkable because she is currently a student at M.S. 80, a ‘renewal school’ which is facing a turn around after years of difficulty and struggle.
The agency hailed this as a sign of progress at the school, while celebrating Choi’s achievement.
M.S. 80 plans to launch a specialized test tutoring program on Saturdays to help more students get into the high schools for gifted young people.
