The Hunts Point Library has reopened after undergoing a $32 million renovation, according to New York City Council Member Rafael Salamanca Jr.
Located at 877 Southern Blvd. in Hunts Point, the library has been reimagined as a state-of-the-art community hub, providing Bronx residents with an enhanced space for creative pursuits, learning, and gathering. Of the total funding, Council Member Salamanca allocated $3.7 million through the New York City Council to help bring the project to life.
“Libraries provide us with a safe space from the daily stressors of life, where we can easily pick up a book and escape into the world of fantasy, solve a murder mystery, or even learn a new skill,” Salamanca said. “This ability to escape, enjoy one’s love for books, or expand one’s knowledge through access to new technology is why libraries are so important to a society – even more so to a community like mine that has historically seen its access to these restricted and overlooked. For all these reasons and more, I am excited that our Hunts Point Public Library is finally reopened for Bronxites of all ages to enjoy, and was proud to deliver funding that helped make this day a reality for my constituents.”
The Hunts Point Library, originally built 92 years ago as the last library funded by the Carnegie endowment, is listed as a historic landmark. Its newly renovated facilities are now open to the public Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
An official ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the reopening is scheduled for February.
