ITEM: On the other side of the rock spectrum is The Starving Artist Gallery in City Island where Bronx singer/songwriters and acoustic bands of all styles can take the stage. On Saturday, July 26, at 8:30 p.m. owner Elliot Glick takes the stage. Besides being a major supporter of local talent Elliot himself has been making headway on internet radio on various web-sites including one that is connected to Neil Young. The lovely Nicola takes the Starving Artist on Saturday, August 9. Pete Morton is there on Sunday, July 13 at 3 p.m. while singer Kate Spina visits on Friday, July 18, at 8 p.m. I want to personally thank Elliot, Monica and Uncle Bill for welcoming me for a very intimate acoustic show two weeks ago. Thanks guys! There is no venue in the city that treats you better than The Starving Artist Gallery. www.starvingartistonline.com
ITEM: I’d like to say a few words about Rose Montalto who passed away last week from lung cancer. When my friends and I had our first bands back on Barkley Avenue and Hollywood way back in the day, there was no place for us to play. Rose and her husband Tony let us use their living room to put on our first shows. That’s right, I said living room. I will never forget the never ending kindness Rose showed for me and all the rockers who were passing through Barkley Avenue. As crazy a teen as I was Rose always seemed to get it. She was a beautiful lady who had four beautiful daughters and she was like the momma for the whole block. She always had a movie star’s charisma I thought; think of an Italian Mae West. That was her. I guess the greatest thing I can say about Rose, and many would agree is she was cool; real cool. She’ll be missed. Rock on. Rock out.
