Police Beat | Murders drop in almost every precinct in the Bronx

The number of murders either decreased or remained at zero in every precinct, with one exception.

According to the NYPD’s crime statistics for Bronx police precincts in the 28-day period from Feb. 19 to March 17, 2024, when compared with statistics from the same time time period a year ago, the number of murders either decreased or remained at zero in every precinct, with one exception.

Murders dropped in the 40th, 43rd, 44th, 48th and 50th precincts and remained the same at zero in every other precinct with the exception of the 46th Precinct, where there was a notable jump from zero in the same time period a year ago to four this year. This precinct also saw notable increases in robberies and grand larcenies which increased by 22.7% and 32.5%, respectively. However, the most extreme jump in crime in this precinct was of burglaries, which saw a jump from 12 to 21, marking a change of 75% over this time period. This precinct includes Fordham, University Heights, Morris Heights and Mount Hope.

The 46th Precinct wasn’t the only to see a rise in crime in this time period.

In the 49th Precinct, every type of major crime reported by the NYPD increased with the exception of murder, which remained at zero. Some of these changes were less severe, such as robberies, felony assaults and burglaries, which increased by 13.3%, 12.9% and 7.1%, respectively.  However, rapes increased from one to two in this time period and other crimes increased by as much as 87%, which is the case for grand larcenies in this precinct. Grand larceny auto crimes also saw a significant jump of 65.4% during this time period as compared to last year. The 49th Precinct includes Allerton, Morris Park, Van Nest, Pelham Parkway, Eastchester Gardens and Pelham Gardens.

The 47th Precinct, which covers Woodlawn, Wakefield, Williamsbridge, Baychester, Edenwald, Olinville, Fishbay and Woodlawn Cemetary, also saw their fair share of crime. Robberies and grand larceny saw smaller rises of 7.4% and 3.9%, respectfully, but also saw a 20.6% rise in grand larceny auto crimes and 33.3% rise in rapes. Burglaries also rose by 21.7%. However, like many other precincts in this time period, murders remained at zero, and this precinct saw a formidable fall in felony assaults at an 18.4% decline.

Other precincts managed well in this time period in regard to crime. In the 42nd Precinct, including Claremont, Crotona Park East and Crotona Park, rapes fell by two, resulting in a 66.7% decline. Grand larcenies and grand larceny auto crimes also fell by significant amounts, with a 30% decline in the former and a 54.1% decline in the latter. Felony assaults and burglaries increased by 13.3% and 21.7%, but this trend of either of these crimes increasing was also seen in other precincts, such as the 43rd Precinct, which includes Westchester Avenue, Castle Hill Avenue, White Plains Road and Parkchester.
