Police Beat | Bronx precincts see crime spikes of up to 140%

When comparing the NYPD’s crime statistics for Bronx police precincts in the 28-day period from Feb. 5 to March 3, 2024, with statistics from the same time time period a year ago, certain precincts dropped off in crime but others saw increases upwards of 140%.

Crime increased by as much as 75% in the 40th Precinct, which is the case for burglaries in this time period. Burglaries spiked from 24 to 42, according to NYPD data. The 40th precinct includes Port Morris, Mott Haven and Melrose.  Robberies, felony assaults and grand larceny crimes all increased to some extent, with the less extreme of those being with felony assaults, which saw only a 5.4% increase. However, robberies rose by 40% in this time period and grand larcenies were not far behind at 35.6%.  Murders and rapes halved in this time period and grand larceny auto crimes dropped by 34.6%.

In the 46th Precinct, which includes Fordham, University Heights, Morris Heights and Mount Hope, crime increased by as much as 65.6%, which is the case for grand larcenies in this time period due to a jump from 32 to 53. Other crimes increased in this precinct too, such as burglaries, which rose by 33.3%. Robberies and felony assaults dropped by 5.9% and 9.1%, respectively. Cases of rape fell from three to one and grand larceny auto crimes fell by 23.8%.

For the 48th Precinct, which includes Arthur Avenue, the Cross Bronx Expressway and Crotona Park form the southern border, murders, rapes and grand larceny auto crimes fell, but all other major crimes increased. Burglaries went up by 25%, and robberies and grand larcenies were not far behind at 20% and 23.7%, respectively.

In the 49th Precinct, every major crime increased with the exception of murders, which remained the same at zero.  The most extreme of these jumps was of grand larcenies, which saw a whopping 140% spike compared to last year — a jump from 35 to 84. Burglaries also saw a significant increase of 87.5%. Robberies, felony assaults and grand larceny auto crimes all increased also by 14.3%, 22.2% and 32.1%, respectively.  This precinct includes Allerton, Morris Park, Van Nest, Pelham Parkway, Eastchester Gardens and Pelham Gardens.

Some precincts saw declines in major crime during this time period, such as the 47th Precinct. Crime fell by as much as 30.2% in this precinct, which is the case for felony assaults. Other crimes fell to varying degrees; robberies decreased by 13.8% and burglaries decreased by 4%. The 47th Precinct includes Woodlawn, Wakefield, Williamsbridge, Baychester, Edenwald, Olinville, Fishbay and Woodlawn Cemetery.

Similarly, crimes fell as much as 100% in the 45th Precinct, which is the case for rapes in this time period. Burglaries fell by 44.4% in this time period and precinct, and cases of grand larcenies and felony assaults fell by a respective 16% and 10%.  The 44th Precinct includes Throggs Neck, Co-op City and City Island.
