Police Beat | Felony assaults spike as high as 119% in Bronx precincts

The number of felony assault cases spiked in certain Bronx precincts when comparing the NYPD’s crime statistics in the 28-day period from Jan. 22 to Feb. 18, 2024, with statistics from the same time time period a year ago.

In the 48th Precinct, which includes Arthur Avenue, the Cross Bronx Expressway and Crotona Park from the southern border, felony assaults saw a steep 119.2% increase with 26 cases in the same time period last year to 57 this year. Cases of robbery also increased by 117.6%. Additionally, burglaries saw an increase of 86.7% in this time period. However, cases of murder dropped from three to zero and cases of rape decreased by 50% in this precinct.

Cases of rape saw significant increases in certain precincts. In the 44th Precinct, which includes Grand Concourse, Bronx Terminal Market and Yankee Stadium, cases of rape increased from four to six, marking a 50% increase. In the 52nd Precinct, there was an increase from six to nine this year, resulting in another 50% increase.  This precinct includes Bedford Park, Fordham, Kingsbridge, Norwood, Bronx Park and University Heights. However, the most severe increase in cases of rape continued to be in the 42nd Precinct, where there was a 300% increase compared to last year with a jump from two to eight cases this year.  This precinct includes Claremont, Crotona Park East and Crotona Park.

Grand larcenies saw a steep increase in certain precincts across the borough. The 48th Precinct saw a steep 103.6% increase in grand larcenies compared to last year, with a jump from 28 to 57 cases. Grand larcenies increased in other precincts as well, with the most notable of these being in the 49th Precinct, which saw a leap from 31 to 77 this year, marking a 148.4% rise. This precinct includes Allerton, Morris Park, Van Nest, Pelham Parkway, Eastchester Gardens and Pelham Gardens.

Murders were split across the borough, with either a decrease or no change in eight of the precincts and increases in the other four. 

Robberies continued to spike in this time period in the 50th Precinct, comprising Riverdale, Fieldston, Kingsbridge, Marble Hill and Spuyten Duyvil, where a jump from eight to 13 resulted in a 62.5% increase.  However, other crimes decreased in this precinct, such as felony assaults, burglaries, and grand larceny auto crimes, by as much as 64.3%.

Grand larceny auto crimes either decreased or rose marginally across the borough with the exception of the 52nd Precinct, which saw an increase of 54.2%. Other precincts saw a range of decreases in grand larceny auto crimes, with the most notable being in the 45th Precinct, which saw a change from 49 cases to 25, marking a 46.5% decline compared to last year. This precinct includes Throggs Neck, Co-op City and City Island.
