Police Beat | Grand larceny crimes increase across the Bronx as grand larceny auto crimes decline

When comparing the NYPD’s crime statistics for Bronx police precincts in the 28-day period from Dec. 25, 2023, to Jan. 21, 2024, with statistics from the same time time period a year ago, grand larceny crimes have increased, while the number of grand larceny auto crimes have gone down.

Grand larceny crimes rose as much as 57.6% in this period, which is the case for the 42nd Precinct, which includes Claremont, Crotona Park East and Crotona Park.

However, some other precincts saw only a marginal increase in these crimes, such as the 52nd Precinct, which includes Bedford Park, Fordham, Kingsbridge, Norwood, Bronx Park and University Heights, which saw a 7.4% increase compared to the same time period a year ago.

In the few precincts that didn’t see an increase in grand larceny complaints, the decrease was relatively mild.  In the 41st Precinct, which includes Hunts Point and Longwood, there was a decrease of 3.4%.  The data was similar for the 43rd Precinct, where the decrease was less than 3%, but the 46th Precinct saw a larger decrease of 18.4%.  The 46th Precinct includes Fordham, University Heights, Morris Heights and Mount Hope.

Murders across the borough saw marginal changes.  Murders either decreased or remained the same in every precinct except the 45th and 46th, where cases went from 0 in this same period last year to 1 this year.  The most notable decrease was in the 44th Precinct, which went from 3 cases a year ago to 0 this year.  The 44th Precinct includes Throggs Neck, Co-op City and City Island.

The only precinct that saw a decrease or no change in all major crimes was the 43rd Precinct, which includes Westchester Avenue, Castle Hill Avenue, White Plains Road and Parkchester.  Cases of felony assault, burglary and grand larceny auto crimes all more than halved compared to last year’s same time period, and the decrease in robbery cases were not far behind with a change of 47.3% compared to last year.

The 44th Precinct, which includes Grand Concourse, Bronx Terminal Market and Yankee Stadium, saw notable decreases in all major crimes with the exception of grand larceny cases, which saw an increase of 17%.  The most notable decrease in this precinct was of burglaries, which saw a decrease of more than half (55.6%).

Grand larceny auto crimes decreased almost unanimously across the borough with the exception of the 50th and 52nd precincts, which saw increases of 20.0% and 6.2%, respectively.  Other boroughs saw a range of decreases in grand larceny auto crimes, with the most notable being in the 42nd Precinct, which saw a change from 35 cases to 15, marking a 57.1% decline compared to last year.

The 47th Precinct saw increases in all major crimes except for murder, which stayed the same from last year, and grand larceny auto crimes with a decrease of 24.5%. Cases of rape increased from one to two, a 100% increase compared to last year.  Notably, cases of felony assault increased from 47 to 69 and cases of grand larceny crimes increased from 47 to 59, marking changes of 46.8% and 25.5%, respectively.  The 47th Precinct includes Woodlawn, Wakefield, Williamsbridge, Baychester, Edenwald, Olinville, Fishbay and Woodlawn Cemetary.
