A machete wielding man was shot dead by police in Mott Haven.

According to police, Mario Sanabria, 69, was shot in an apartment on the third floor of 230 Brook Avenue just after 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, December 5.

Police said uniformed NYPD Emergency Services Division members were executing a search warrant at the apartment when two members entered a rear bathroom where they were confronted by a man armed with a two-foot long machete.

Sanabria, who did not speak English, was ordered by police to drop his weapon and allegedly refused to comply.

Police said when the suspect continued to approach a police officer, the police officer fired once, striking the man in the chest.

Sanabria was pronounced dead at Lincoln Hospital.

Police said Sanabria was not the suspect for whom they were initially seeking.

The warrant was obtained to search for guns and drugs in the apartment.

Police said Miguel Conde, the son of Sanabria’s roommate, was arrested outside of the building and is considered to be the main suspect.
