To the Editor,

The Afro-Latino Association for Policy and Advocacy (ALAPA) highlights the work of Leonardo L. Coello, the Bronx director for the New York City Mayor’s Office, Community Affairs Unit. His efforts in bridging the gap between NYC agencies and residents in low-income communities, particularly in the South Bronx, are a source of immense pride for ALAPA.

ALAPA is dedicated to advocating for policies and individuals that empower and uplift Afro-Latino communities while promoting inclusivity, unity and collaboration.

One of the distinguishing features of Coello’s approach is his connections to the communities he serves. His grassroots initiatives and commitment have played a pivotal role in ensuring that government agencies are not merely distant entities but active agents of change in the lives of the South Bronx residents. His outreach and advocacy have brought government resources closer to those who need them most.

ALAPA also recognizes Mayor Eric Adams for his visionary leadership in appointing individuals like Coello. Adams has demonstrated a commitment to inclusive governance by selecting leaders who not only understand but also share the heritage and experiences of their communities. This approach not only ensures genuine representation but also fosters the creation of equitable policies that benefit all New Yorkers.

It is with immense pride that ALAPA highlights Coello’s contributions to the South Bronx and the Afro-Latino community. His journey is an inspiration to all individuals dedicated to serving their communities and working towards a more inclusive, equitable and vibrant Bronx.
