Koppell bill takes aim at pitchers

Councilman Oliver Koppell introduced legislation at the meeting of the City Council on Wednesday, September 24, aimed at protecting high school pitchers from incurring injury to their arm.

The legislation requires that the Commissioner of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene promulgate safety rules regarding pitching in competitive baseball games for high school age students in the public school athletic league.

The legislation was motivated by case studies of little league pitchers who suffered arm injuries as a result of excessive pitching.

“New York’s young people competing in the PSAL deserve to be protected from overuse injuries in the same manner as young people participating in Little League baseball,” Koppell said.
