The Community First Democrats, a grassroots slate of local political candidates and community organizers, hosted a voter registration and outreach event on Saturday, April 11, at 231st Street and Godwin Terrace in Kingsbridge.
Organizers engaged with dozens of Bronx residents during this event, which ran from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This initiative was intended to connect with unregistered voters in the area, regardless of voting preferences or whether or not they lived in a different district or borough.
Among those on hand to assist the Community First Democrats in the effort were Democratic District Leader Candidate Izaiah “Zeek” Barrow, Bronx 81st Assembly District Leader Re-Elect Abigail Martin, Field Coordinator Carolina Valenzuela, Campaign Coordinator Miles Harris and State Committee Member Candidate Bereket Ghebremedhin.

The primary focus of the voter registration and outreach event was to meet people where they are, provide them with access to information and encourage them to participate in the democratic process.
“It felt good to actually talk to people face-to-face and learn what’s going on in the community,” said Jenny Caro, a local resident who attended the event.
Community members gathered information, shared their concerns with the Community First Democrats and engaged in open dialogue about local issues and the importance of civic responsibility. The high number of residents willing to participate reflected a growing interest in civic participation in the Kingsbridge community. This event also highlighted the importance of face-to-face engagement to build trust.

“This is about meeting people where they are and making sure they understand that their voice matters,” said Morgan Evers, candidate for New York State Assembly in the 81st District and Community First Democrats organizer. “Civic engagement starts with connection, and when we take the time to listen and educate, we empower our communities to take part in shaping their future.”
Community engagement across the district is a key element of Evers’ campaign. He noted that grassroots outreach is critical to building long-term civic participation across the district.

The Community First Democrats who organized this event emphasized that civic engagement goes beyond voting. It also ensures communities have a voice in decisions that directly impact their daily lives. The welcoming and accessible environment at the voter registration and outreach event helped break down common barriers that can prevent many people from engaging in civic life.
This initiative reflects a broader effort to increase civic engagement in Kingsbridge and other Bronx neighborhoods. The event is part of an effort to heighten voter awareness and participation, especially within underrepresented communities.
Organizers of this effort intend to continue their outreach efforts in the coming weeks, encouraging residents to register to vote, stay informed and participate in upcoming elections.
