The Bronx is reportedly experiencing a healthy storefront vacancy rate of less than 10%, according to the New York Times article “A Surge of New Restaurants Drives New York City’s Storefront Revival.”
This is particularly significant because many of the storefronts have been filled by restaurants, meaning the borough’s diverse food scene is also thriving. Additionally, the Times reported that restaurants and bars have created over 300,000 jobs in The Bronx.
Andrew Rigie, the executive director of NYC Hospitality Alliance, was quoted in the article saying these restaurants will continue to thrive if people visit them. So, if you have ever felt guilty about eating out instead of staying home and cooking, just know that you are making a positive impact by contributing to your local economy.
But supporting small businesses does not always have to be so expensive. In fact, the Bronx Tourism Council is preparing to celebrate the success of the borough’s eateries by reviving Savor the Bronx, the organization’s very own restaurant week. From Feb. 18-23, there will be opportunities for people to dine out on a discount at restaurants across the borough.
Currently, the Bronx Tourism Council is recruiting restaurants to participate in Savor the Bronx. If you work at a restaurant or other form of eatery in the Bronx and you are interested in offering a price fixe menu of your choice from Feb. 18-23, visit ilovethebronx.com to fill out the interest form. Business owners should also be aware that the Bronx Economic Development Corporation and the Business Initiative Corporation of New York are here to lend a hand — literally. Both organizations offer loan programs with competitively low interest rates that your small business or restaurant may be eligible for. Visit bxedc.org and bicofny.org to learn more.
