Officers at the 49th Precinct are dusting off their track shoes as they prepare for the 6th Annual 5K 9/11 Memorial Run In Memory of Lt. Thomas Clesse.
On Saturday, September 6, the cops will lead a race where each step represents progress along the journey of hope as participants remember those who died on September 11, as well as the beloved brother in blue.
After serving 32 years on the force, many of which were at the 49th Precinct, Lt. Clesse lost his fight with cancer on July 27, 2002.
“It’s always important to remember this lieutenant and the people we lost on that tragic day,” 49th Precinct Community Affairs Police Officer Vic DiPierro said. “So it’s not about running, it’s about being part of something that means so much.”
With creative planning from Sgt. Thomas Bruen, a long-time friend of Lt. Clesse, for the first time the run will feature a raffle and 50/50 drawing.
For only five dollars, participants will have the opportunity to purchase a ticket and a shot at the grand prize – $500 cash.
The second prize, a Basket of Cheer from Gleason’s Café, and third, two tickets to a Yankees game, aren’t too shabby either.
A special donation from Frankie & Johnny’s Pine on Bronxdale Avenue will also treat the raffle winner to a dinner for two.
With registration from 9 – 10 a.m. in front of the precinct’s stationhouse on Eastchester Road, DiPierro said there’s plenty of time for everyone to get involved.
“We’re growing each year as more and more people are excited about the race,” he said about the run that will span down Pelham Parkway to White Plains Road, leading runners 1.3 miles in each direction.
Each participating child will receive a medal, while adults will compete for first, second and third place trophies. And with races in the Under 50 and Over 50 categories, everyone has a chance to win.
“It’s also a great opportunity to meet a lot of officers from the 4-9 and have a great day doing something positive,” DiPierro said.
Registration is $20 and includes a free t-shirt and post-race party at Gleason’s Café. Kids under 13 race for free. All of the proceeds will go to the Widows and Orphans of Fallen Police Officers Fund.
