Firefighters battled a raging four-alarm fire at 3117 Bainbridge Ave. in the Bronx on Tuesday morning.

The first arriving members of the FDNY were met with heavy smoke and fire conditions from multiple commercial buildings, including the Hillside Meat Market and Bainbridge Bakery, just after 3:50 a.m. on Oct. 10.

The total response consisted of 168 firefighters and EMS paramedics were withdrawn from the building as the roof began to collapse under heavy fire load. A combination of three towers and five hose lines were put into operation to knock down the main fire.

A nearby resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Bronx Times, “The smoke was so thick, we thought our apartment building was on fire so we started banging on doors to get everyone out just in case.”

As of 6:30 a.m., the fire was still not under control. Following a preliminary investigation, the cause and point of origin will be determined by the FDNY Fire Marshal’s Office.
