Despite the snowstorm, over 40 community members from various parts of New York City braved the weather to come together in celebration in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx on Feb. 13. Love filled the air at the Walnut Bus Stop, just one day before Valentine’s Day and during a heavy snowstorm.
Chef Zoltron, owner of the Walnut Bus Stop, recognizing that many individuals may be experiencing hardship or loneliness during this holiday, opened his doors with a warm welcome. He greeted attendees with a delicious meal, music, gifts, prizes, and dessert.
Expressing his gratitude, Chef Zoltron shared his hopes of seeing everyone again in the future. He said that when he woke up this morning, he wasn’t sure what he would do with all the food he had prepped the day before, but now he’s glad everything was eaten, drank, and enjoyed.
District leader for the 78th District Dion Powell expressed his surprise at the large turnout and commended the quality of the food. Despite the snow, he noted, everyone seemed happy and cheerful.
The event was emceed by Theresa Kemp, also known as Mama T. The event was presented by the Bronx Veteran Chambers of Commerce and Devil Dog USA Incorporated, with Chief Executive Officer Gonzalo Duran representing the latter.
One of the guests from the local shelter said she doesn’t remember the last time she had such a great meal. “It’s not because I haven’t eaten well, but this food was just really, really good.”
Kemp expressed gratitude and shared her own experiences of hardship. She explained that this event held special significance for her, as she wished for such an experience during her own difficult times. Bringing love to others brought her immense joy. “I know how hard it feels to be homeless; we are here for you, and remember your situation will get better soon.”
Guests included individuals from local shelters, nursing homes, and various community stakeholders. Representatives from the Bronx Borough President’s Office, New York City Public Advocate’s Office, the New York City Mayor’s Office of Human Rights, Community Board members and other community leaders were also in attendance.
The event concluded with raffles, music and dancing, with attendees enjoying good times despite the weather concerns.
