Mount St. Michael Academy School President Bro. Michael Flanigan, FMS, has named Clare Brewster as the next principal of the school, effective July 1.
Brewster will become Mount St. Michael Academy’s first-ever female principal in its nearly 100-year history. She will take over from Bro. Steve Schlitte, who has served as the principal of the school, located at 4300 Murdock Ave., since 2010.
She has been tasked with continuing the mission of the Marist Brothers, which is to provide a Catholic, college-preparatory education to a brotherhood of young men from grades 6-12.
“I look forward to continuing The Mount’s history of excellence in the Marist tradition, holding each of our students and faculty to high standards, and to providing our young men with an excellent education. I also look forward to collaborating with all of our families so that each of our students will thrive,” Brewster said.
The Marist Brothers, who govern Mount St. Michael Academy, were impressed by Brewster’s wealth of experience, knowledge and dedication. A product of Catholic schools, Brewster graduated from the College of Holy Cross and earned her Master’s degree at Fordham University. She started her teaching career at the Marist Brothers’ St. Agnes Boys’ High School in Manhattan, where she eventually rose to the role of Assistant Principal of Academics.
After St. Agnes closed, Brewster wanted to continue educating youths at a Marist school. She was brought on to the faculty at Mount St. Michael Academy as an English and Social Studies teacher. For the past decade, she has served as the school’s Assistant Principal of Academics.
“Clare brings a wealth of knowledge which will assist in her new position, but as important as her experience is, so is her dedication and knowledge of the Marist Brothers’ mission,” Bro. Flanagan said. “In her 24 years of dedication to Marist Education, both at St. Agnes Boys H.S. and at The Mount, her rapport with the Brothers and desire to further their mission, which she sees as her vocation, will ensure that the Marist charism will continue to guide our school. Her experience in an urban all-boys’ school makes her the obvious choice. As President, I very much look forward to working closely with her.”
