49th sets annual Clesse Run

Its time to break out the running shoes in preparation for the 49th Precinct’s 7th annual 5K 9/11 Memorial Run in honor of Lt. Thomas Clesse.

The run began in memory of Lt. Clesse, who passed away from cancer on July 27, 2002, but who had dedicated many of his 32 years of NYPD service to the 49th Precinct.

Following the events of 9/11 the officers of the 49th Precinct decided to expand the event to not only honor their long-time colleague, but as a tribute to all the women and men affected that tragic day.

“It started in memory of Lt. Clesse, but we incorporated 9/11, and all the proceeds we raise from that day go to the Widows and Orphans Fund of the NYPD,” said Community Affairs Officer Vic DiPierro.

The run will be held on Saturday, September 12, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. in front of the 49th Precinct. Registration is $ 20 for adults, and free for children under 13. Preregistration is available.

The race begins at 10 a.m., stretching from Eastchester Road to White Plains Road and then back to Eastchester, along Pelham Parkway North, which will be blocked off for the duration of the event.

“Each year it has been growing and it’s a good opportunity for people to come interact with many of the officers that run, including Captain John Greeley and some of the past commanding officers,” said DiPierro. “It’s basically a day of remembrance for victims of that terrible day and for a great lieutenant who is sorely missed.”

Every child to participate will receive a medal. First, second and third place trophies will be given for each age group, participants over 50 and participants under 50. All persons who register will receive a free t-shirt.

Raffles will be held that day to win a gift certificate for dinner for two at Frankie & Johnny’s Pine Restaurant on Bronxdale and Yankee tickets donated by Sergeant Thomas Bruen.

A luncheon wrap up celebration for all participants will be held after the race at Gleason’s Café on Eastchester Road.

“It’s a great event that brings many people from the community together with the police for the benefit of a great cause,” said Joe Thompson, president of the 49th Precinct Community Council. “We have some people that run to win, but mostly the people are there to support the cause and have fun. Everyone is welcome to participate.”
