Happy Graduation

To our beautiful granddaughter Victoria: wishing you all of our love always on your graduation in May 2017. We are so proud of you. Keep up the good work — Gram, pop and uncle Matt.

In the U.S. Navy

U.S. Navy Petty Officer Yennmi Martinez, 2nd Class Borough native and DeWitt Clinton High School graduate, is serving aboard one of the U.S. Navy’s largest warships, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Martinez works as a machinist’s mate aboard the Norfolk-based ship, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier which is one of ten operational aircraft carriers in the Navy today.

Machinist’s mates are the sailors responsible for operating and maintaining steam turbines and reduction gears used for ship propulsion and auxiliary machinery such as turbo generators, pumps and oil purifiers.

Martinez said in a statement released by the U.S. Navy: I like working in a challenging environment…I like the cultural diversity and all the programs they offer to junior sailors on the ship.

The sailor is one of about 3,200 people that make up the ship’s company.

There are 2,000 sailors aboard the ship who comprise the ‘air wing,’ helping to fly and maintain the aircraft aboard the floating airport.

The Navy offers me the opportunity to explore the world and get an education, said Martinez.
