Borough Native Serves

On U.S. Navy Submarine

The U.S. Navy reports that Petty Officer 2nd Class Jose Gonzalez, a borough native who graduated from the High School of American Studies in 2008, is serving aboard one of the world’s most advanced ballistic missile submarines, the USS Nevada.

Gonazlez is a machinist’s mate (auxiliary) on the sub, which is based in Bangor, WA.

A navy machinist’s mate is responsible for maintenance and repair of the ship’s auxiliary equipment. This includes air, refrigeration, hydraulic, atmosphere control, diesel and pumping systems.

For me, serving in the Navy is my way to give what I can to the country, stated Gonzelez via the U.S. Navy.

He described his job this way:

I enjoy having a group of people that can help you out with the job. There is always someone to back you up if you need help.

The USS Neveda is one of the Navy’s 14 Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines.

Measuring 560 feet long, 42 feet wide and weighing more than 16,500 tons, a nuclear-powered propulsion system helps push the ship through the water at more than 20 knots.
