Bronxites above enjoyed their day in the sun as this year’s beach season opened.

NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver joined Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. and Community Board 10 district manager Kenneth Kearns for the ceremonial opening of Orchard Beach on Wednesday, May 25 at its landmarked promenade.

Commissioner Silver announced that the city’s eight public beaches will remain open through Labor Day Weekend and lifeguards will be on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Adding to Orchard Beach’s daily recreational activities, the borough’s only public beach will host several exciting events for the season including a performance by Japanese drum group Taikoza on Saturday, June 11 and Borough President Diaz’s annual Orchard Beach Summer Concert Series held every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. starting on Sunday, July 10.
