Young Man Shot Dead At Mace Avenue Deli

An attempted robbery over 50 cents and shooting at a deli on Mace and Holland avenues on Monday, August 8 left a young man dead and another facing murder charges.

Nineteen-year-old Mace Avenue Dasheem Campbell was arraigned the following Thursday in Bronx Supreme Court on 12 charges, including second degree murder for the killing of 19-year-old Willmer Hernandez.

According to police reports, Campbell and a group of four or five others, who have not been arrested, accosted Willmer and his younger brother Stevens Hernandez in front of the bodega at 2460 Holland Avenue, shortly before 11 p.m.

“Yo, you guys got 50 cents?” Campbell asked Stevens, according to the police report.

One of the individuals with Campbell then allegedly pulled a handgun and said “Man, I’ve had enough of this,” while a third went through Stevens’ pockets and took his cell phone.

Police allege that the gunman then shot Willmer in the stomach. He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where he died.

Willmer lived on Mace Avenue as well, and was set to begin studies at Borough of Manhattan Community College in the fall. He also worked at Red Lobster.

Akram Mohammed, who works at the deli where Willmer was shot, said he used to see the victim in the store on a regular basis.

Mohammed said, “He used to come in the morning and get his coffee and go to school, then he would come back grab a soda and go to work.

Campbell was arrested on Wednesday, August 10. He is being held without bail.

Police seized surveillance footage from the store and are looking for others involved in the incident.
