The Legacy of Former “Colored” School No. 4, a Talk by Eric K. Washington

Witness this illustrated talk from Historian Eric K. Washington about the last of a network of racial-caste public schoolhouses in New York City, “Colored” School No. 4, built in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan in 1849-1850. Washington spearheaded the successful effort to preserve the building, with both the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission designating it a historic landmark and New York City Mayor Eric Adams pledging $6 million towards its rehabilitation. Washington’s talk will highlight many of the notable teachers, students and events that were associated with this Black heritage site.
