Last month, Samaritan Daytop Village, along with the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services and Recovery Services and Community Partnerships, held the grand opening for the borough’s Peer Alliance Recovery Center location on the second floor of 368 E. 148th Street.

The recovery center, known as PARC Bronx, provides Bronxites with resources and tools they need to lead sober and productive lives and offers one-on-one recovery coaching, workshops, group sessions, computer training, social and recreational activities, vocational assistance as well as peer-to-peer support for those suffering with substance abuse disorder.

PARC Bronx is being funded in part through a NYS OASAS’ State Opioid Response Grand of $350,000.

Samaritan Daytop Village’s new location is free and open to the public.

PARC Bronx is located in Mott Haven, which is one of the top five city neighborhoods containing the highest number of reported overdoses from heroin and fentanyl.

In 2018, opioids were the cause of death for more than 3,000 New Yorkers – approximately 272 of those deaths were from the Bronx.

“Without a doubt, the opioid crisis has hit this community hard – and all too often, we only hear about the tragic consequences,” said Mitchell Netburn, president and CEO of Samaritan Daytop Village. “What we don’t hear enough about are the stories of the people who are working to break free of the chains of addiction – we don’t hear about the thousands of people who wake up and enjoy another day in recovery.”

“Every morning, I wake up with exuberance and zeal because, at PARC Bronx, I help guide and support participants on their recovery journeys,” said Chris Kelly, a former Samaritan Daytop Village client who is now working as a PARC Bronx recovery coach. “This center is an absolutely amazing place and a blessing for all who can use it.”

“Here, members can come to grow in spirit, career and in life, and PARC is there for every step of the way without judgement or rejection,” Kelly added. “It holds a special place in my heart.”

Samaritan Daytop Village has hundreds of trained recovery coaches at its 50 plus locations. A 30-hour training course towards being a recovery coach is available at PARC Bronx and open to anyone interested in their own or other individuals’ recovery.

“The addition of this new recovery center in the Bronx will further expand the availability of that support and help more people in the New York City area who have been affected by this disease.”

Samaritan Daytop Village’s first Peer Alliance Recovery Center location at 92-13 147th Place in Jamaica, known as PARC Queens, opened in April 2017.
