Flag & Sand From Iowa Jima

At the Wednesday, May 8 meeting of The Marine Corps Leagues Yankee Detachment #255, taking place at the Samuel Young American Legion Post #620, John Powers presented to Commandant Owen Mangan and the members of the detachment an American flag that he himself flew on top of Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima. Powers recently made a pilgrimage to Iwo Jima. He also gave the group a capsule of sand from the beaches of Iwo Jima, and showed them a video of the event and a certification from The Iwo Jima Association of America which authenticated the event.

This kind gesture was very much appreciated by the members of the detachment, especially considering the significance of the location. The flag was flown on the same spot where the flag was raised in World War II.

And the sand was gathered from the same beach where so many Marines lost their lives.
