CB 11 Health Fair

Community Board 11’s Health and Human Services committee will host its annual health fair from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 29.

The event will take place indoors at Bronx House, located at 990 Pelham Parkway South.

Featured at the fair will be dozens of screenings, demonstrations and giveaways.

Presenters include Montefiore, Jacobi Medical Center, Human Resources Administration, and other local health facilities and agencies.

Notable Passing

Martin Garry III, a former long-time resident of Pelham Bay, passed away in Saraota, FL on Wednesday, March 14 after fighting cancer.

He was 77. Garry was a educator who spent this entire career, from 1965 to 1994, at DeWitt Clinton High School.

He was a Social Studies teacher, coordinator of Student Affairs and an assistant principal.

Even after his retirement, he was active in the DeWitt Clinton Alumni Association.

He loved to travel and loved the opera.

His parents Vincent and Lucy Galasso predeceased him.

He is survived by his brother Dr. Vincent Garry, as well as nieces and nephews.

Her was a graduate of Cathedral High School, and earned a BA from Manhattan College and a MA from Hunter College.

Morris Park Writer Reads Her Book

Local Morris Park neighbor and new author Anne Iodice enjoyed a promotional reading at a Barnes & Noble on Saturday, March 3.

First she read the Eric Carle’s ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and then from her new book ‘Can We Talk.’

It was a very enjoyable morning for the children listening to the stories as well as for the author.

Borough Native serves on USS George H.W. Bush

A borough native, Theodore Forrester, is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard a ship called the USS George H.W. Bush, an aircraft carrier described by the U.S. Navy as a floating airport at sea.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Forester is an electronics technician aboard the carrier, which operates out of a Norfolk, VA navy base.

On board, he fixes cables and repairs circuit cards to keep operations running smoothly.
