The following remarks were made by Larry Nikunen, NYPD Bronx Patrol borough commander regarding a shooting by police of a man armed with a knife in the Throggs Neck Houses on Wednesday, September 14:
My name is Assistant Chief Larry Nikunen. I’m the commanding officer Patrol Borough Bronx.
This is preliminary information, as this is an active investigation.
A few minutes before 1 a.m. this morning, two uniformed officers from Police Service Area #8, which covers the Throggs Neck Houses here in the 45th Precinct, observed a male running and holding his side, believing he may have had a weapon.
The officers directed him to stop and the suspect fled into 2755 Dewey Avenue.
The officers pursued the suspect into the building as they radioed for assistance. The officers caught up with and encountered the suspect on the seventh floor, where he was in possession of a knife and cutting himself. He was also threatening to kill himself.
A 45th Precinct plainclothes sergeant responded to the officers’ call for assistance and deployed a conducted energy device on the suspect.
The suspect continued to advance toward the officers with the knife.
One of the uniformed housing officers then discharged one round, striking in suspect one time in the upper right thigh. The suspect still refused to drop the knife, and the sergeant deployed the conducted energy device a second time, allowing the officers to place the suspect into custody.
The suspect, a male Hispanic, 25, was removed to Jacobi Medical Center and is in stable condition.
He has been identified as Carlos Colon. The two housing officers were uninjured, but were taken to Einstein Medical Center in observation.
