Hello readers and welcome to another edition of Around Town!

Congratulations Graduate

Congratulations to Christina Elizabeth Rizopoulos on her graduation from Manhattan College. Christina received a number of scholastic honors and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Childhood Education. She looks forward to teaching in the fall.

Her entire family — including her father Bill Rizopoulos, who owns PelBay Realty and Pel-Parkway Realty and her mother Dr. Lisa Rizopoulos, a professor at Manhattan College — along with her brother Perry and both her grandmothers are very proud of her. We wish her luck and success in all of her future endeavors.

Irish-American

Leader Remembered

Mary Holt Moore, 88, a prominent leader in the Irish-American community, passed away on Wednesday, July 13, according to the Ancient Order of Hibernian.

Mary was the mother Dermot Moore, NYS AOH board district 8 director and mother-in-law to Joan Moore, member of Rockland Ladies AOH.

She was raised in the Bronx, one of five children born to Charles and Ann O’Rourke Holt. She is a former resident of Van Nest and Woodlawn.

She was a member of the Chippewa Democratic Club, an aide to Senator Guy Velella and a former candidate for state senate.

She graduated from Hunter College, where she founded the Hunter College Gaelic Society, and also received an Masters of Science degree from the College of New Rochelle.

Mary worked as a special education teacher in the Bronx for decades and raised eight children with her husband, Thomas Moore, a retired FDNY chief who died in 2012.

She served as president of the Bronx Gaelic League and was inducted into the North American Feis Commission’s Irish Cultural Hall of Fame.

An expert in Irish history, literature and music, Mary was a fierce advocate of Irish culture and taught Gaelic. She was also an instructor of traditional céilí dancing.
