Man turns himself in after deadly hit and run

The person allegedly responsible for the death of a Bronx woman in a recent hit and run has turned himself in to the police.

Michael Moreno, a 25-year-old resident of Stormville, NY, has turned himself in after allegedly hitting and killing Gabriela Aguilar-Vallinos, a Bronx resident, in a hit and run incident that took place in City Island on Friday, September 11.

Aguilar-Vallinos, who was biking home from City Island after working her usu shift at Sammy’s Shrimp Box, was hit by Moreno’s car, a two-door, white 2015 Hyundai Genesis, on the northwest corner of the City Island Bridge and City Island Road at about 11:45 p.m. on that Friday evening.

The, 27-years-old waitress, who was found unconscious and unresponsive, was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Moreno, who immediately left the scene following the incident, eventually turned himself in on Tuesday, September 22, almost two weeks later.

He was charged with man slaughter, criminally negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

He is currently pending arraignment in the Bronx Court.

There is currently no confirmation whether Moreno was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

The popular 27-year old Aguilar-Vallinos, who was described as “energetic, friendly”, was a local tragedy.

“The board greatly regrets the loss of this young woman’s life,” said a spokesperson from Community Board 10. “We will review alternatives and other options to make late night travel from City Island to the mainland (of the Bronx) safer.”

The City Island Civic Association has written a petition letter on change.org to the MTA, titled ‘MTA – Expand City Island Bus Service and Make it Reliable!’, which they hope results in expanded service, separated routes for more direct service and other planned improvements.

So far, the petition has received over 250 supports.

“While she wasn’t technically a City Island resident, she spent countless hours devoting her time as an employee to the City Island residents, so she was definitely important to the community,” said a City Island Civic Association officer. “I’m not sure if this incident could have been prevented, but this petition will hopefully provide safer options for residents traveling to and from City Island who don’t own a car and have to travel either by bike or rely on the inconsistent Bx29 service.”
