New fiber optic cable branches out in the Bronx

Verizon FiOS is spreading through the Bronx, offering an advance fiber optics network, with 100-high definition channels and triple play service, including FiOS TV, broadband Internet reaching speeds up to 50 megabits per second and telephone service.

The service announced its initial launch in July of 2008, broadcasting in 108 neighborhoods throughout New York City, with 10 locations in the Bronx, including Baychester, Bronxdale, Eastchester, Edenwald, Laconia, Norwood, Olinville, Wakefield, Williamsbridge, and Woodlawn.

“New Yorkers at long last have a better choice for TV,” noted Maura Breen, New York Verizon general manager.

“We’ve had great success in the suburban areas around the city. Now it’s time to put the Verizon FiOS show on Broadway and eventually every other street, avenue, and boulevard in the city – so New Yorkers can kiss old-fashioned cable good bye.”

The expansion has quickly progressed and in November 2008, service was available in Throggs Neck and Edgewater Park.

“Verizon FiOS TV and bundled services have gotten off to a rousing start in New York City,” said Chris Creager, Verizon’s president of the northeast region.

“Following this Bronx and Brooklyn expansion, we expect to move quickly to reach our objective of making FiOS TV available to 500,000 homes in the city by the end of this year.”

A special launch was dedicated in Parkchester, as the largest privately-owned condominium complex in the U.S., containing 12,271 apartments in 171 buildings.

“This agreement [with Parkchester] underscores the attractiveness of Verizon FiOS services for property owners,” noted Eric Cevis, vice president of Verizon Enhanced Communities.

“Its matters which network is connected to your TV, computer and phone. The immense capacity of our all-fiber network means residents of Parkchester will soon have the latest technology that will support future applications.”

Verizon was unable to release information regarding the areas next to receive the service, but the company is in a six-year agreement to complete the expansion to all five boroughs, guaranteeing that task’s completion by July 2014.
