Students from Rosalyn Yalow Charter School in the Bronx were honored by the New York State Assembly and Senate on Wednesday, June 4, for their success at the New York State Scholastic Chess Championships in March.

The students from Rosalyn Yalow Charter School earned first place in two team divisions. Additionally, fourth-grader Samuel Lin won first place in the K-5 individual division.

Team members were invited to Albany, where their accomplishments were recognized by New York State Education Department Assistant Education Commissioner David Frank, Assemblymember Amanda Septimo and State Senator Jose Serrano. Serrano issued a proclamation honoring the students.

The students’ visit to Albany also included a tour of the State Capitol, lunch at Empire State Plaza and a formal ceremony in which they received their proclamation.

“I’m proud of myself, the team and our coaches. We worked as a team, and the coaches helped us achieve our goal at the NYS Scholastic Chess Championships,” fifth-grade competitor Favor T. said. “I liked visiting the Capitol because we got to meet the people who pass laws for schools and housing and help us shape our future.”
