Police Beat | Pair of Bronx police precincts see a decrease in nearly all major crimes

When comparing the NYPD’s crime statistics for Bronx police precincts in the 28-day period from Jan. 29 to Feb. 25, 2024, with statistics from the same time time period a year ago, the 43rd and 44th precincts saw either a decrease or no change in most major crimes, with increases only in grand larcenies and felony assaults, respectively.

Crimes fell as much as 50% in the 43rd Precinct, which is the case for murders in this time period.  This precinct includes Westchester Avenue, Castle Hill Avenue, White Plains Road and Parkchester. In the 44th Precinct, which includes Grand Concourse, Bronx Terminal Market and Yankee Stadium, crime fell as much as 57.8%, which is the case for grand larceny auto cases in this time period.

However, some other precincts saw significant increases in major crimes, such as the 42nd Precinct, which includes Claremont, Crotona Park East and Crotona Park, which saw a 200% increase in cases of rape compared to the same time period a year ago.

Other crimes spiked across the borough as well.  In the 50th Precinct, which includes Riverdale, Fieldston, Kingsbridge, Marble Hill and Spuyten Duyvil, cases of reported robberies increased by 160%.  The 48th Precinct similarly saw a spike of 100% in robberies, jumping from 15 cases to 30. This precinct includes Arthur Avenue, the Cross Bronx Expressway and Crotona Park from the Southern Border.

Murders across the borough saw marginal changes. Murders either decreased or remained the same in every precinct except the 40th, 46th, 50th and 52nd, where cases increased by one.  The most notable decrease was in the 48th Precinct, which went from three cases a year ago to zero this year. The 48th Precinct includes Arthur Avenue, the Cross Bronx Expressway and Crotona Park from the Southern Border.

Grand larceny auto crimes decreased almost unanimously across the borough with the exception of the 49th, 50th and 52nd precincts, which saw increases of 2.9%, 20% and 4%, respectively. Other boroughs saw a range of decreases in grand larceny auto crimes, with the most notable being in the 44th Precinct, which saw a change from 45 cases to 19, marking a 57.8% decline compared to last year.

The 52nd Precinct saw increases in all major crimes except for grand larceny crimes with a decrease of 5.6%. Cases of burglaries increased from 17 to 22, a 29.4% increase compared to last year. Notably, cases of robbery increased from 32 to 41 and cases of burglaries increased from 17 to 22, marking changes of 28.1% and 29.4%, respectively. Cases of rape doubled in this time period with a jump from four to eight.  The 52nd Precinct includes Bedford Park, Fordham, Kingsbridge, Norwood, Bronx Park and University Heights.

The 47th Precinct saw decreases in all major crimes except for robberies, which saw a 52% increase from last year, and grand larceny crimes with an increase of 68.1%. Cases of rape decreased from three to one, a 66.7%% change compared to last year. Notably, cases of burglary halved and cases of grand larceny auto crimes fell from 64 to 39, marking a 39.1% drop.  The 47th Precinct includes Woodlawn, Wakefield, Williamsbridge, Baychester, Edenwald, Olinville, Fishbay and Woodlawn Cemetery.
