The rate of grand larceny auto crimes has declined across the Bronx during the last 28-day period, paired with a continued rise in grand larcenies throughout the borough, according to the NYPD’s latest crime stats released Apr. 1.

All but three Bronx precincts saw decreases in grand larceny auto crimes in the 28-day period between March 4 and March 31. The 45th Precinct, which includes the neighborhoods of Throggs Neck, Co-op City and City Island, saw a 14.8% increase in comparison to the number of grand larceny auto crimes this time last year. The 47th Precinct, which includes Woodlawn, Wakefield, Williamsbridge, Baychester, Edenwald, Olinville, Fishbay and Woodlawn Cemetary, saw a 5.9% increase in this type of crime, and the only other precinct that did not see a decline in grand larceny auto crimes is the 50th Precinct, which remained the same at 22 reported cases. The 50th Precinct includes Riverdale, Fieldston, Kingsbridge, Marble Hill and Spuyten Duyvil.

Grand larcenies, however, saw a widespread surge across the borough.  Most precincts saw increases of this type of crime of at least double digits, with the exception of the 42nd Precinct (up 9.8% in this time period), which includes Claremont, Crotona Park East and Crotona Park, and the 45th Precinct, which saw a 9.4% increase of grand larcenies.  The only precincts that saw declines in grand larcenies in this time period were the 47th Precinct and the 43rd Precinct, which saw declines of 22.9% and 21.1%, respectively.  The 43rd Precinct includes Westchester Avenue, Castle Hill Avenue, White Plains Road and Parkchester.

Cases of rape either decreased or remained the same in most precincts.  However, in the 49th Precinct, there was a 500% increase in rapes compared to the same time period last year (a jump from one to six this year).  The 49th Precinct includes Allerton, Morris Park, Van Nest, Pelham Parkway, Eastchester Gardens and Pelham Gardens. The 40th Precinct, which covers Port Morris, Mott Haven and Melrose, also saw a rise in cases of rape of 66.7% (from three to five).

Some precincts saw general declines in almost all listed major crimes.  The 43rd Precinct saw decreases in all major crime except for robberies with a slight rise from 37 to 39 (a 5.4% increase).  Similarly, the 50th Precinct saw a rise in only grand larcenies and no other major crimes, with somewhat drastic declines of other crimes such as robberies, which declines by almost 60%, and murders and rapes which dropped to zero. Grand larcenies increased by 25.5%.

The 48th Precinct, which covers Arthur Avenue, the Cross Bronx Expressway and Crotona Park from the southern border, also saw impressive drops in some major crimes. Grand larceny auto crimes halved with a drop from 32 to 16 this time period, and rapes and burglaries were not far behind with declines of 33.3% and 31.8%, respectively.
