Bronx officials and community members gathered Wednesday to celebrate the grand reopening of the newly reconstructed artificial turf field at Harris Park, following the completion of a $2.6 million capital project funded by the New York City Council.
NYC Parks Bronx Borough Commissioner Jessenia Aponte, joined by City Councilmember Eric Dinowitz, Community Board 7 District Manager Karla Cabrera Carrera, local youth leagues, and students from the Bronx High School of Science, cut the ribbon on the revitalized field.
“The newly refurbished field will provide an improved recreational experience for the many Bronx schools and sports leagues that regularly use Harris Park,” Aponte said. “Investments like these not only improve public safety and promote healthier lifestyles, but they also enhance the overall quality of life.”
The playing surface, which is 170,899 square feet, is one of the largest artificial turf fields in the Bronx. The multipurpose sports field is used for soccer, baseball, softball, and lacrosse and provides extensive permitted hours to a variety of local sports leagues and neighborhood schools.
The field’s extensive use reflects Harris Park’s long history as a recreational hub in the northwest Bronx. First acquired by NYC Parks in 1940 and originally developed through federal New Deal programs, the park has provided athletic opportunities for generations. A previous renovation in 1997, funded by former Council Member June Eisland, added new playground amenities and infrastructure upgrades.
“Thanks to this investment, Harris Park remains a vital place for youth, families, and athletes to gather, play, and thrive,” Dinowitz said.
