The East Bronx History Forum and the Huntington Free Library are pleased to announce the Forum will hold its 168th meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. with a presentation by Susan Olsen, the director of historical services for the Woodlawn Cemetery.

Her background is in the operation of historical museums. She received her B.A. in history from Rhodes College, did her graduate studies in history at Vanderbilt University and obtained her master’s in Philanthropy from New York University.

The topic of this presentation is the Woodlawn Cemetery (established 1863), which serves as the final resting place for the wave of 19th century immigrants who settled in the Bronx. Some of the “residents” who are among those memorialized at Woodlawn include Civil War Gen. Franz Sigel, restauranteur August Luchow, Medal of Honor recipient and attorney Julius Langbein, prominent brewers and victims of the General Slocum Disaster.

This program will celebrate Woodlawn’s German “residents,” sharing stories of the departed and images of monuments that honor their memory.

We look forward to you joining us at the Huntington Free Library for this in-person presentation.
