A local optometry practice’s vision of providing Bronxites professional eye care is still going strong 25 years later.

Eye Care Unlimited Neighborhood Professional Vision Center commemorated the milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, September 22 at its 1086 Morris Park Avenue office.

Assemblyman Michael Benedetto and Councilman Mark Gjonaj presented a proclamation to the optometrists and staff for their dedicated service.

“In an environment where more and more local businesses are struggling under the weight of internet shopping, big box stores and changing consumer behavior, we should celebrate success stories like Eye Care Unlimited and the 25 years of service they have provided to our community,” expressed Gjonaj.

Upon graduating SUNY College of Optometry, doctors AJ Contento and Evan Kaplan founded the practice on September 8, 1992 at 1748 Crosby Avenue before expanding into Morris Park a year later.

Optometrists AJ and Annette Contento and Evan Kaplan provide state-of-the-art and compassionate vision care for their patients.

Doctors AJ and Kaplan treat patients at each office and offer specialty services including difficult contact lens fitting, low vision exams and ocular disease management.

As a primary eye care physician, Annette enjoys serving the Morris Park community on a daily basis since day one.

She brings her skill, experience and family practice model to serve a diverse patient population with a multitude of eye care needs.

The insightful business offers comprehensive eye exams; eyeglass and contact lens consultations; treats dry eyes, diabetic eye disease, low vision, astigmatism and eye allergies; tests for macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma and assesses if patients require a LASIK procedure.

For over five years, Eye Care Unlimited has utilized the Optos Daytona, an ultra-widefield retinal imaging device, to obtain high-resolution retinal images and provide the optometrist a 200° view of the retina without using dilation drops.

The optomap image assists eye care professionals in early detection, management and effective treatment of retinal detachments and tears, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.

The Optos Daytona provides patients a more comprehensive, faster examination without experiencing the dilation drops’ blurry vision and light sensitivity after effects.

AJ said Eye Care Unlimited was the first Bronx optometry practice to use the Optos Daytona and it’s available at both offices.

The practice also offers optical coherence tomography, an non-invasive imaging test using light waves to capture cross section images of the retina.

“What I enjoy the most about my job is serving the community because there’s not a day that goes by where I’m not treating family, friends, teammates and classmates,” expressed AJ, a Country Club native.
