A Bronx woman was found dead after an apparent domestic dispute inside a public housing complex early Monday morning, police said.

At approximately 3:39 a.m. on March 25, officers from the 40th Precinct responded to a 911 call of a person in need of assistance inside the John Adams Houses at 720 Westchester Ave. in the South Bronx. When cops arrived, officers found a 46-year-old woman unconscious and unresponsive, sustaining injuries to the face and head.

EMS responded to the call and pronounced the victim dead at the scene, authorities said. Police are withholding the woman’s identity pending family notification.

Although a motive is not clear right now, police say a domestic incident led to the woman’s death. No weapons were recovered at the scene, but according to police sources, one person who knew the victim is in custody being questioned in connection with the woman’s death.

Charges against that individual are pending the results of the ongoing investigation, law enforcement sources said.

Locals and pols alike have been sounding the alarm regarding domestic violence in the Bronx for years.

NYPD statistics indicate that from 2015 to 2020, eight out of the top 15 community districts in New York City with the highest rates of intimate partner homicides were from the Bronx — in neighborhoods that include Claremont, Crotona Park, Melrose, Morrisania, Bathgate and Belmont.

Last year, the Bronx Times tracked Deputy Commission Public Information-reported homicides from Jan. 1, 2023 to Dec. 29, 2023 — and identified nine adult women whose deaths were classified as homicides in Bronx precincts. The youngest was 23 and the oldest was 71.
