Con Edison has restored electricity to more than 34,700 homes and businesses in the Bronx since the start of a dangerous heat wave that has gripped New York City, pushing temperatures into the upper 90s and sending the heat index soaring above 100 degrees.

As of 9 a.m. on Monday, June 24, only three Con Edison customers in the Bronx remained without power out of a total 481,928, according to the utility. Crews have been working around the clock to repair infrastructure damaged by extreme heat and increased electrical demand as New Yorkers try to stay cool.

The multi-day heat wave is the city’s first major weather emergency of the summer. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories, with forecasters warning of “dangerously hot conditions” through Tuesday. Overnight temperatures have offered little relief, remaining in the upper 70s to low 80s across the five boroughs.

The oppressive heat and widespread use of air conditioning have placed significant stress on the city’s power grid. Con Edison has asked customers to help conserve energy to maintain system reliability. The company recommends avoiding the use of energy-intensive appliances like washers, dryers, and microwaves during peak afternoon and evening hours. Residents are also advised to run only one air conditioning unit when possible, and to set thermostats to the highest comfortable temperature.

The utility is also asking customers to postpone charging electric vehicles unless necessary.

Customers can report outages and check restoration status by visiting www.conEd.com/reportoutage, using the Con Edison mobile app, or calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting, residents are encouraged to indicate if neighbors are also affected. Estimated restoration times are provided when available.

Con Edison continues to post safety tips, storm prep information, and general updates via its social media platforms on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook.

To help residents beat the heat, New York City has opened cooling centers throughout the five boroughs, including in the Bronx. Locations include public libraries, senior centers, NYCHA community rooms, and Salvation Army sites. A full map of cooling centers can be found at finder.nyc.gov/coolingcenters.
