“The Bronx Beat,” a series of TV segments produced by YES Network in partnership with the Bronx Economic Development Corporation (BXEDC), won an Emmy Award for “Public Affairs Program (Series)” from the New York chapter of the National Academy of Television. This exciting news comes just after the second season of the series wrapped up in late September.
The series began in 2023 as a way to highlight small businesses, cultural institutions and whole neighborhoods in the Bronx. The YES Network approached the BXEDC to give insight on which businesses were most deserving of a three-minute clip on the jumbotron in Yankee stadium during home games, which initiated a years-long partnership between the organizations.
In season one, the segments focused on Mon Amour Coffee and Wine, several businesses on 161st Street and more. For the second season in 2024, we had the chance to focus on City Island, the iconic Lloyd’s Carrot Cake and the Bronx Children’s Museum.
The Bronx Beat has become a great way for the BXEDC to promote familiar attractions, as well as small businesses with which people may not be as familiar. Many people come to the borough exclusively for Yankee games, unaware of all that the Bronx has to offer. That’s why it is so important that leadership within the Yankees and YES Network recognize how they can use their platform to communicate something to their crowds: that the Bronx has a lot to offer.
This initiative has provided us the opportunity to reshape the perception some may have of the Bronx. But when viewing “The Bronx Beat,” they can see for themselves the strong business sector, cultural significance and fascinating history behind the borough.
The BXEDC would like to thank the Academy for the award. We truly see this as a win for Bronx businesses, and we’re looking forward to continuing to work on this project again in the spring.
