Students at Birch Family Services Pelham Bay read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle and nonfiction books, including “National Geographic Readers: Caterpillar to Butterfly” by Laura Marsh.

The children watched for almost two weeks as their caterpillars transformed into beautiful butterflies. The students learned the four stages of the life cycle including new vocabulary words such as metamorphosis, pupa, chrysalis and cocoon. They also learned what butterflies need once they transform from a caterpillar to a butterfly, such as sugar or honey water.
