The nonprofit community development financial institution New Jersey Community Capital has provided an $8.5 million New Market Tax Credit loan to support the development of the upcoming Hip Hop Museum at 585 Exterior St. in Mott Haven.
Founded by hip hop pioneers Rocky Bucano, Kurtis Blow, Grandwizzard Theodore, Joe Conzo Jr. and Grandmaster Melle Mel in 2015, the Hip Hop Museum’s new location will anchor Bronx Point, a mixed-use complex along the Harlem River.
The museum is expected to open in the summer of 2026. It is being developed by the construction company L+M Development.
Planned features of the Hip Hop Museum include a research center, an archive, educational programs and career development opportunities.
Construction of Bronx Point was completed in late 2023. Spanning 585,000 square feet, the complex features 542 total permanent affordable units. There is also community and retail space in Bronx Point. In addition to the future home of the Hip Hop Museum, the property also has a K-12 charter school and three acres of public waterfront.
BrandNu and Gensler designed Bronx Point. The project was co-developed by L+M Development Partners and Type A Projects.
