The 49th Precinct Community Council toasted local leaders and police officers at its 28th annual breakfast gala and awards ceremony on Friday, May 20 at Maestro’s Caterers. This year’s distinguished civilian honorees were Edith Blitzer, Pelham Parkway Neighborhood Association founder who was presented with the Tom Twyman Citizen Award; Steven Squitieri, Sanitation Salvage Corporation owner and this year’s Business Fellowship Award recipient and Joseph Bombace who earned a special recognition award for going door-to-door to collect merchant donations for the precinct’s annual breakfast and its National Night Out Against Crime celebration held every August. Captain Keith Walton selected the precinct’s Lieutenant Kishon Hickman, Sergeant Ryan Hughes, Detective David Revans and officer Daisy Rivera to share this year’s Cop of the Year Award. Additional awards were presented to Police Administrative Aide of the Year honoree Carmen Baez, Auxiliary Officer of the Year recipient William Datoma and Explorer of the Year awardee Carmen Guzman. P.S. 83, P.S. 108, P.S. 105, P.S./M.S. 498, P.S. 481 Cub Scout Pack 162 49th Precinct Explorers and the Solano family also took home special recognition awards for their participation in the precinct’s annual holiday food drive.
Community Affairs Detective Jay Sturdivant accepted a citiation from Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj.
