NYC Parks Citywide Monuments Conservation Program members rolled up their sleeves to help restore the Chief Nimham and the Stockbridge Indians Monument in Van Cortlandt Park and other monuments throughout the borough on Monday, August 1. NYC Parks’ historic Chief Nimham Monument, often referred to as the ‘Indian Field Memorial’, was dedicated on June 14, 1906 by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The structure is composed of natural boulders supporting a commemorative bronze plaque detailing how Nimham and numerous Stockbridge Indian field scouts made the ultimate sacrifice during a skirmish with British and Hessian soldiers on August 31, 1778.
