It’s a day of fun in the sun in Veterans Memorial Park as the girls of the Throggs Neck Girls Softball League gear up for their first annual Family Picnic.
On Saturday, August 9 families of those participating in the TNGSL, or local residents just looking for an enjoyable day in the park, are invited to join in the festivities beginning at 10 a.m.
Games and activities will commence in the morning as parents and kids battle against one another in a water balloon toss competition, potato sack races, and more. Dancing contests will be held for the older girls and Miss Pinkie will present a special magic show for the little ones.
“It’s a picnic so we are asking people to bring their own stuff, but we have games and events planned for the whole day,” said Rachel Mazza, president of the league. “We just want to make sure it’s going to be fun.”
For the first time ever the girls in the league will have a chance to run for a position in the newly formed junior board.
“We want to hear the girls’ voices and get their opinions to make sure we do what they want and think should be done for the league,” said Mazza. “Elections will be held that day and in the morning we will give them a chance to speak.”
A classic Barbie Townhouse will be raffled to help raise money for the league. A variety of baskets full of goodies will also be raffled off at the picnic.
“We are trying to do this partly as a fundraiser to help raise money for closing day. On closing day we traditionally have a nice big event,” said Mazza. “But this is more than just a fundraiser, it’s also a chance for families and the community to come together.”
That day Mazza will also be collecting new and gently used stuffed animals for a program that sends the toys over to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan to be distributed to the local children.
The cost for the picnic is $ 10 per family and guests are asked to please register in advanced at the concession stand by the girl’s softball field, open normally from 4 to 8 pm. Girls in the league wishing to run for a position on the new board must also register prior to the picnic.
