For the first time in 25 years, the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx added eight Indian gharials to JungleWorld’s river habitat which made their public debut on Wednesday, April 5 just in time for Spring Break in NYC.
Gharial are a slender-snouted crocodilian native to the northern Indian subcontinent and are classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Eighty percent of the remaining world population live in Chambal River in India, the last stronghold for the species.
